Ntarama Church Memorial (Rwanda)

Weather…

The Ntarama Church Memorial is a deeply moving and evocative site in the Bugesera District, located approximately 30 kilometers south of Kigali, dedicated to the victims of the 1994 Genocide. The small Catholic church in Ntarama became the scene of a horrific massacre in April 1994, when an estimated 5,000 people who had sought sanctuary there were murdered by militias. Unlike many other memorial sites, the buildings have been largely preserved in the state they were found following the attacks, including bullet holes in the walls and forced-open doors. Inside the church, the clothing, personal belongings, and identification cards of the victims are displayed alongside their remains in a way that emphasizes the individual humanity behind the anonymous statistics. The site also features a memorial garden and mass graves where the deceased have been laid to final rest. As part of its historical significance, Ntarama was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023, serving as a permanent monument against intolerance and hatred.
