Bolghar (Russia)

Weather…

The ruins of Bolghar on the left bank of the Volga River represent the glorious history of the Volga Bulgars and the Golden Horde. Between the 8th and 15th centuries, Bolghar was a flourishing economic and cultural center that dominated the trade routes between Eastern Europe and the Islamic East. In 922, the Volga Bulgars officially adopted Islam here, making the site an important pilgrimage destination for Russian Muslims to this day. The archaeological open-air museum preserves a fascinating blend of Mongol-Tatar and early Islamic architecture. Outstanding structures include the White Mosque, whose elegant marble strongly resembles the Taj Mahal, the 14th-century Black Building, and the great minaret. A modern memorial complex, built in the shape of a giant open book, houses the world's largest printed Quran, which is intricately decorated with precious stones.
