The AvtoVAZ Automobile Plant is an industrial megastructure on the banks of the Volga River in the Samara Oblast. The decision to construct this giant was made in 1966 in close technological partnership with the Italian manufacturer Fiat, aiming to meet the rapidly growing demand for passenger cars in the Soviet Union. The factory grounds span unprecedented dimensions, featuring a main assembly line that is among the longest in the world. It was from here that the legendary VAZ-2101 (known as the Zhiguli or Lada) rolled out in millions of units onto the roads of the Eastern Bloc. The city of Tolyatti, named after Italian communist leader Palmiro Togliatti, was massively expanded around the plant to house tens of thousands of workers and engineers. In the post-Soviet era, AvtoVAZ navigated turbulent periods of privatization, collaborations with Renault-Nissan, and eventually a return to state influence. Today, the plant remains the absolute backbone of the Russian automotive industry, continuing to produce millions of vehicles for the domestic market.
