Pushkinskiye Gory is one of Russia's most significant cultural pilgrimage sites, deeply intertwined with the life and work of the national poet Alexander Pushkin. The heart of the destination is the Pushkin State Museum-Reserve, which encompasses the family estates of Mikhailovskoye, Trigorskoye, and Petrovskoye. It was in Mikhailovskoye that the poet spent years in exile, producing some of his greatest masterpieces inspired by the surrounding hills, lakes, and forests. Visitors can explore the faithfully reconstructed manor houses, stroll through ancient linden alleys, and visit the Svyatogorsky Monastery, where Pushkin is buried. The entire area exudes a sense of poetic tranquility and historical depth that remains unchanged for centuries. The landscape is a well-suited example of Central Russian beauty, which seems to reflect the verses written here by the poet. The best time to visit is in June during the Pushkin Poetry Festival or in September when the forests turn brilliant shades of gold, the poet's favorite season. Located in the Pskov region, it is best reached by car or bus from Pskov. Local eateries serve traditional Russian country fare, often featuring apples and honey from the historic orchard estates.
