Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin (Russia)

Weather…

The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is a massive medieval fortress that stands majestically on a steep hill at the strategic confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers. Built between 1500 and 1515, this monumental red-brick kremlin served as an indispensable military bulwark, protecting the eastern borders of the Muscovite state from the attacks of the Kazan Khanate. The complex impresses with its walls, which are up to five meters thick and nearly two kilometers long, ingeniously integrated into the steep incline of the terrain, along with 13 massive defensive towers. The kremlin played an outstanding historical role in 1612 when the merchant Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky gathered the Russian people's militia here to liberate Moscow from Polish-Lithuanian occupiers. Today, the beautifully restored complex houses government buildings, excellent art museums, a World War II memorial, and has visitors spectacular panoramic views over the river valley.
