Sarov is a city with an extraordinary history that merges two seemingly contradictory identities: deep spiritual heritage and cutting-edge modern science. Founded in the late 17th century as a monastery site, Sarov became famous as the home of St. Seraphim of Sarov, one of the most revered saints in the Russian Orthodox Church. Following World War II, the city's trajectory shifted radically when it was selected as the secret hub for the Soviet nuclear weapons program due to its isolated location. Operating under the codename Arzamas-16, elite scientists including Andrei Sakharov worked here to develop the first Soviet atomic bomb. Today, Sarov maintains its status as a closed administrative-territorial formation (ZATO), housing the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics. The city remains a place of sharp contrasts, where meticulously restored cathedrals and monastic cells stand alongside high-security research laboratories, embodying a unique intersection of Russia's religious tradition and technological might.
