Listvyanka
Listvyanka is the primary gateway to Lake Baikal for most travelers. The village stretches along the shore right where the Angara River flows out of the lake. Visitors come here to visit the Baikal Museum to learn about unique endemic species like the Nerpa seal, and to sample the famous Omul fish, traditionally smoked, at the local market. A highlight is taking the chairlift to the Chersky Stone viewpoint for a sweeping panorama of the lake and the distant Khamar-Daban mountains. Listvyanka is also a starting point for the Great Baikal Trail hiking routes. In winter, the village becomes a hub for ice activities, including ice skating on the world's largest natural rink and dog sledding. Gastronomy is centered around lake fish. Listvyanka is easily reached from Irkutsk in about an hour by bus or car. While summer is first-rate for hiking and boat trips, February and March are the best months to experience the legendary crystal-clear Baikal ice.
