Darkhan is Mongolia's third-largest city, founded in 1961 as a planned socialist industrial centre with massive aid from the Soviet Union, East Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Its name means blacksmith in Mongolian, a direct reference to the heavy industry the city was designed to host. Around 75,000 people live here at 700 metres above sea level in Darkhan-Uul Province, some 220 kilometres north of Ulaanbaatar along the Trans-Mongolian Railway, making it one of the country's principal gateways towards Russia. The Darkhan Steel Plant, a large cement works and the Kharaa thermal power station all operate here, supplying much of northern Mongolia with electricity and district heating. The town is also home to the celebrated Kharagiin Monastery, which preserves sacred statues including that of Megjid Janraisig, rescued from destruction during the Stalinist purges of 1937. Broad avenues and a rigid grid betray classic Soviet urban planning, complemented in recent decades by modern residential blocks and shopping centres.
