Erdenet is Mongolia's second-largest city, founded in 1974 as a planned settlement under a Soviet, Mongolian joint venture in Orkhon Province at an altitude of 1,300 metres. The town owes its existence to the Erdenet Mining Corporation, which operates one of the largest copper and molybdenum open-pit mines in the world and produces around 530,000 tonnes of copper concentrate each year. With a population of roughly 100,000, Erdenet ranks behind only Ulaanbaatar in size. Until 2016 Russia held a 49 percent stake in the mining company, after which the share was sold in full to the Mongolian government. Geological surveys estimate ore reserves at more than 1.2 billion tonnes, and the mine alone generates around a quarter of all Mongolian export revenue. The city is laid out with wide Soviet-style boulevards, prefabricated apartment blocks, its own combined heat-and-power plant and a branch line of the Trans-Mongolian Railway linking it to Darkhan and the capital.
