Amarbayasgalant Monastery
Amarbayasgalant Monastery, the 'Monastery of Tranquil Felicity', is one of the most beautiful and architecturally significant sites in Mongolia. Built in the early 18th century to honor the memory of Zanabazar, the first spiritual head of Buddhism in Mongolia, it is located in the serene Iven Valley. Miraculously, much of the monastery escaped the destruction of the 1930s, leaving 28 temples intact as a showcase of exquisite Manchu-style craftsmanship. The complex is renowned for its symmetrical layout, lively red-lacquered pillars, and intricate roof tiles. The interior of the main temple houses a magnificent statue of Zanabazar and various Buddhist deities. Surrounding hills feature large white stupas and a golden Buddha statue, accessible by walking trails that offer panoramic views of the monastery located in the green steppe. The chanting of monks and the sound of ceremonial drums create a deeply spiritual atmosphere that attracts both pilgrims and tourists. Located about 360 km north of Ulaanbaatar, the journey takes around 6-7 hours by car. The best time to visit is during the summer months, particularly in August for religious ceremonies. Accommodation is available in nearby ger camps or simple guesthouses. Visitors should remember to dress modestly and respect the local customs when entering the sacred temple grounds.
