Land of the Leopard National Park (Russia)

Weather…

The 'Land of the Leopard' National Park in Russia's Far East, near the city of Vladivostok, was established in 2012 with a singular, urgent mission: to save the Amur leopard, one of the rarest and most critically endangered big cats on the planet. This expansive protected area stretches along the mountainous border region shared by Russia, China, and North Korea, preserving a unique mosaic of Korean pine and broadleaf forests. Thanks to unprecedented anti-poaching measures and habitat restoration efforts, a perilous population of fewer than 40 individuals has successfully tripled to over 120 animals today. Beyond the Amur leopard, the park also provides a secure haven for the equally endangered Amur tiger, giving this specific region the highest density of wild felids in all of Asia. Strict environmental protection laws, advanced camera trap monitoring, and crucial transboundary cooperation have transformed this park into an outstanding model of successful international wildlife conservation.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to see the Amur leopard is winter (December to March) when snow makes tracking easier. Spring and autumn also offer activity, but sightings are rarer due to dense vegetation.
🌅
Best time of day
Leopards are crepuscular - schedule observations for early morning or late evening. At midday they usually rest in dense undergrowth and are difficult to spot.
📜
Etiquette
Always stay on marked trails and keep at least 200 meters distance from animals. Feeding or luring leopards is strictly prohibited and can lead to conflicts.
🎒
What to bring
A spotting scope or telephoto lens is essential for photographing leopards from a safe distance. Warm, quiet clothing and sturdy hiking boots are recommended for stalking in snowy terrain.
🧭
Getting there
The national park lies near the border with China and North Korea, about 120 km southwest of Vladivostok. A permit is required; apply in advance at the park office in Vladivostok or online.
🦌
What to expect
The Amur leopard is one of the rarest big cats - chances of a sighting are low. Plan multiple days, stay quiet at suitable viewpoints, and rely on park rangers' expertise.
