Surgut, the lively „oil capital“ of Siberia, stands out as an urban oasis from the seemingly endless taiga forests and swamps of the West Siberian Plain. The city, which was founded as early as 1594 as one of the first Russian settlements in Siberia on the banks of the mighty Ob River, experienced an unprecedented explosion in the 1960s. With the discovery of gigantic oil and gas fields, the modest logging village rapidly transformed into an ultra-modern economic powerhouse, which today is home to the energy giant Surgutneftegas. Despite the harsh climatic conditions with extremely cold winters, Surgut features excellent infrastructure. The architectural landmark of the city is the spectacular Yugra Bridge, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in Siberia, which boldly spans the Ob.
