Severobaikalsk is the primary hub on the northern shore of Lake Baikal and a key junction on the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) railway. Unlike the more tourist-heavy southern regions, Northern Baikal gives a wilder and more pristine experience. Built in the 1970s for railway workers, the town showcases unique Soviet-era urban planning. However, the true draw is the panoramic natural surroundings: dramatic mountain ranges plunging into the lake's crystal-clear depths and secluded bays accessible only by boat. The area is famous for its natural hot springs, such as Goudzhekit or Khakusy, providing a relaxing soak in the heart of the Siberian wilderness. Hikers can tackle portions of the Great Baikal Trail or venture into the Baikal Mountains. This region is less crowded, making it convenient for those seeking an authentic Siberian encounter. The sheer scale of the lake and the silence of the surrounding taiga evoke a deep sense of freedom. Local cuisine revolves around the endemic Omul fish, prepared in various traditional ways, smoked, salted, or grilled. Access is primarily via the BAM railway, an adventure in its own right, or by flights from Ulan-Ude or Irkutsk. The best time to visit is during the summer (July-August) for hiking and cruising, or in late winter (March) when the lake's ice is thick enough for vehicles and the legendary blue ice formations are visible.
