Barguzinsky Nature Reserve (Russia)

Weather…

The Barguzinsky Nature Reserve holds a truly historic place in Russian environmental conservation, as it is the very first and oldest state reserve in the country, established in 1916 during the twilight of the Tsarist era. Situated along the photogenic, mountainous northeastern shores of Lake Baikal, it was originally created with the urgent mission of saving the Russian sable, which had been hunted to the absolute brink of extinction for its highly valuable fur. This monumental rescue mission was a phenomenal success, and today, robust sable populations thrive throughout the dense, dark coniferous forests of the Siberian taiga. Beyond the sable, the expansive reserve also safeguards brown bears, reindeer, musk deer, and numerous endemic species linked to Lake Baikal. Thanks to strict anti-poaching patrols and the total prohibition of commercial activity, the ecosystem of the Barguzin Mountains has made a remarkable recovery. It now serves as a crucial Biosphere Reserve for studying unlogged East Siberian nature.
