Sonsorol Island (Palau)

Weather…

Sonsorol Island is a remote coral outcrop in the southwest of Palau, forming part of a small group of islands far removed from the main cluster. Spanning only about 2 km in length, it is shielded by a tight fringing reef that creates a small, calm buffer against the Pacific swells. The island's interior is a thick canopy of tropical forest, where coconut palms rise above a diverse undergrowth. Due to its extreme isolation and the absence of an airstrip, Sonsorol remains largely untouched by the modern world, with only occasional supply vessels making the long journey from the capital. This isolation has preserved a unique way of life for its few inhabitants and kept the natural environment in a pristine state, making it a significant site for biodiversity.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This exceptionally isolated island in the southwest is rarely visited by regular boats. Visitors are almost always completely dependent on expensive private expeditions.
📅
Best season
Only the calmer months from February to April permit the hazardous sea journey across the open ocean. During the heavy monsoon season, access is completely cut off.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Sonsorol is a small, densely forested coral island boasting gorgeous, deserted beaches. Established paths barely exist, so movement is mostly off-trail through the sand.
🎒
What to bring
There is no local infrastructure; you must bring a tent, provisions, drinking water, and a satellite phone. Having high-quality first-aid equipment is extremely vital.
🅿️
Parking
Your vehicle will remain in Koror, from where most ocean-going vessels depart. There are absolutely no motorized means of transportation on the tiny island of Sonsorol.
⚠️
Safety
Medical assistance is completely unreachable in an emergency, demanding extreme caution during all activities. Avoid risky swimming maneuvers near unfamiliar reef breaks.
⏱️
Time needed
Because of the multi-day ocean crossing, this trip is a massive undertaking that often lasts a week or more. A short day trip is quite simply physically impossible here.
