Nakhal Fort is one of the largest and most prominent forts in Oman, with origins believed to date back to the pre-Islamic era. However, the present structure was mainly shaped in the 17th and 19th centuries by the Ya'aruba and Al Busaid dynasties. The fort is unique as it was built around a large, irregular rock, with the rock forming part of its foundations and walls. It served as a residence for imams and walis (governors) and for the defense of the surrounding oasis and trade routes. The fort features several towers, a gatehouse, and a maze of rooms. A notable feature is the nearby Ain A'Thowarah hot spring, whose water is channeled through a falaj system to irrigate the surrounding date palm groves.

Visiting
Nakhal Fort can usually be visited; it is a historic building with several rooms and courtyards. Access is possible both indoors and outdoors; the upper floors are accessible.

The fort is usually open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays possibly only in the morning. Public holidays may have different hours.

Photography is allowed throughout the fort; the rooftop has a great view. Flash is not needed indoors and should be avoided.
Time needed
A visit usually takes one and a half hours to enjoy the rooms, courtyards, and the view. For a guided tour, allow two hours.

Combine the visit with the Nakhal hot springs or the nearby Rustaq fort. The Jebel Akhdar region gives many historical and natural attractions.
Getting there
The fort is about 120 kilometres from Muscat on the road to Rustaq. A rental car is the best option, as public transport is irregular.

Visit the fort in the late afternoon to enjoy the golden light on the stone walls. Wear sturdy footwear for climbing to the upper levels.
