Al Mudhaibi is a wilayat in the north of the Ash Sharqiyah North region with about 75,000 inhabitants. The town is located about 200 kilometers southeast of Muscat in a transitional zone between the Hajar Mountains and the Wahiba Sands. Al Mudhaibi consists of several villages and oases, of which Sinaw and Samad ash-Shan are among the oldest. Archaeological finds indicate settlement for more than 3,000 years. The wilayat is famous for its extensive date palm plantations, irrigated by the centuries-old Aflaj irrigation system. Several Aflaj systems in the region have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Aflaj Irrigation Systems of Oman' since 2006. Significant historical forts and watchtowers shape the landscape in the Sultanate of Oman and testify to the strategic importance of the region.
