Al Mudhaibi is a wilayat in the north of the Ash Sharqiyah North region with about 75,000 inhabitants. The town is located about 200 kilometers southeast of Muscat in a transitional zone between the Hajar Mountains and the Wahiba Sands. Al Mudhaibi consists of several villages and oases, of which Sinaw and Samad ash-Shan are among the oldest. Archaeological finds indicate settlement for more than 3,000 years. The wilayat is famous for its extensive date palm plantations, irrigated by the centuries-old Aflaj irrigation system. Several Aflaj systems in the region have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Aflaj Irrigation Systems of Oman' since 2006.
