Kolka is located at the northernmost tip of Kurzeme, where the Gulf of Riga and the open Baltic Sea meet at Cape Kolka (Kolkasrags). This geographical phenomenon often creates visible wave breaks in the water and makes the location one of the Baltics' most spectacular viewpoints. For centuries, the cape was a feared obstacle for navigation, which is why the distinctive lighthouse now stands on an artificial island in the sea just off the coast. Kolka is one of the last centers of Livonian culture, a Finno-Ugric people with their own language and traditions. Visitors can learn more about this nearly vanished heritage at the Livonian cultural center and admire the typical architecture of the fishing villages. The surrounding area is part of the Slītere National Park, which features unique flora and fauna, including vast dune landscapes and untouched primeval forests. In spring and autumn, Kolka is an internationally known hotspot for bird watching. The tourist infrastructure is simple but authentic, with cozy campsites and small guesthouses. There are no large hotels, which preserves the secluded atmosphere. Culinary-wise, you should definitely try the traditional 'Sklandrausis,' a sweet pastry made from rye flour and carrots. The drive from Riga takes about 2.5 hours through the pretty landscape of Kurzeme. A visit at sunrise or sunset at the Cape is an unforgettable experience.
