Veljusa Monastery (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Veljusa Monastery, dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos Eleusa (the Merciful), is one of the most significant monuments of Byzantine architecture in North Macedonia. Located in the village of Veljusa, about 7 kilometers northwest of Strumica, the monastery sits on the slopes of Mount Elenica. It was founded in 1080 by the monk Manuel, who later became the Bishop of Strumica. The church architecture is unique, designed as a tetraconch with a central dome and four smaller auxiliary domes. The monastery is particularly famous for its original 11th-century frescoes, regarded as masterpieces of Comnenian art, as well as its intricate mosaic floors. A notable feature is the marble iconostasis, which is among the oldest and best-preserved examples of its kind in the region. For centuries, the monastery served as a vital spiritual center and has been renovated several times while always maintaining its authentic character. Today, the monastery is home to a community of nuns who maintain the religious life and preserve the historical site. Its peaceful location and spiritual atmosphere make it a major pilgrimage destination.
