Demir Kapija, whose name means 'Iron Gate' in Turkish, is located at the narrowest point of the Vardar River valley in southern North Macedonia. The town is famous for the remarkable Vardar Gorge, which serves as a natural gateway between the northern and southern parts of the country. Historically, this site held immense strategic value, as evidenced by the remains of the ancient city of Stena and a medieval fortress. In 1928, King Alexander I of Yugoslavia established the 'Royal Winery' here, laying the foundation for the town's current reputation as a premier viticultural center. The region's intense summer heat creates handy conditions for producing robust red wines. Today, Demir Kapija is also a popular destination for outdoor activities, particularly rock climbing in the limestone cliffs of the gorge, and features a specialized museum dedicated to the history of wine.
