Battle of Kumsong Battlefield

The Kumsong Battlefield was the site of one of the last major offensives of the Korean War in July 1953. The Battle of Kumsong occurred as the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (PVA) launched a massive offensive against South Korean and UN forces to improve their positions before the impending armistice. The attack focused on a key salient in the front line held by South Korean troops. Despite initial successes and the capture of the Kumsong salient, the PVA forces were unable to sustain their advance and suffered heavy casualties from UN counterattacks and artillery fire. The battle had little impact on the final demarcation line but resulted in tens of thousands of casualties on both sides in the final days of the war. The area remains a heavily militarized zone and a symbol of the brutality of the Korean War's endgame.
