Munchon is a coastal city in Kangwon province on the east coast of North Korea, north of the more well-known city of Wonsan. Its economy is strongly maritime-based, relying on fishing, aquaculture, and shipbuilding. The port of Munchon is an important base for the Korean People's Army fishing fleet. In recent years, the city has also become a center for seafood farming. In addition to maritime activities, Munchon is also known for its salt production facilities. The city is located on the main coastal road and railway line connecting Wonsan to the north of the country, which gives it a certain strategic importance as a transportation hub. The landscape is characterized by the coast on one side and agricultural land on the other.
