Lake Sijung is an easy on the eye lagoon on the east coast of North Korea, located between the cities of Wonsan and Kumgang. It is famous well beyond the country's borders for its medicinal mud, used in local sanatoriums to treat skin and joint diseases. The lake is separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land, offering a harmonious landscape of calm water, white sandy beaches, and dense pine forests. Visitors come here to find peace and enjoy the healing effects of nature. Beautiful water lilies grow in the lake, and the surroundings invite long walks. Culinarilly, the region gives fresh fish from the lake as well as seafood from the adjacent East Sea. The atmosphere is significantly more relaxed than in larger tourist centers, offering an insight into traditional Korean recreation. Access is via the coastal road from Wonsan, taking about an hour. The best time to visit is summer, when the mild sea climate and bathing opportunities are most attractive. Nearby are historical pavilions once used by nobles as resting places. A stay at Lake Sijung is ideally combined with a trip to the Kumgang Mountains.
