Sungyang Seowon in Kaesong was one of the leading private Confucian academies during the Joseon Dynasty. It was established on the site of the former house of the famed Goryeo loyalist, Jeong Mong-ju. The academy was founded to train Confucian scholars and to honor the memory of Jeong Mong-ju and other sages. The complex includes a shrine, a lecture hall, and dormitories in a typical seowon layout. Although founded in the Joseon period, its purpose is deeply connected to the history of the Goryeo dynasty through its veneration of Jeong Mong-ju. Today, it stands as a museum and historical monument, offering insights into the educational system and Confucian culture of the Joseon era. It is part of the 'Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong' UNESCO World Heritage Site.
