South Gate of Kaesong (Namdaemun) (North Korea)

Weather…

The South Gate of Kaesong, known as Namdaemun, is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the former capital of the Koryo Dynasty. It was constructed between 1391 and 1393, marking the transition from the Koryo era to the Joseon Dynasty. Originally serving as the primary entrance through the inner fortress wall, it played a crucial role in the city's military defense. During the Korean War in 1950, the wooden pavilion atop the stone foundation was destroyed by fire, but it was faithfully reconstructed in 1954 using traditional methods. The gate houses the famous Yonbok Temple Bell, a massive bronze instrument cast in 1346 that weighs nearly 14 tons. Today, the site is recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble titled "Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong." Its architecture features a sturdy granite base with an arched passageway and a gracefully curved roof pavilion. The gate stands as a testament to medieval Korean urban planning and the enduring legacy of the nation's architectural heritage.
