The Ongjin Peninsula Coast is situated in southwestern North Korea within South Hwanghae Province, jutting out into the Yellow Sea. The region is characterized by a highly indented ria-type coastline, featuring numerous bays, islands, and deep inlets formed by post-glacial land subsidence. Geologically, the peninsula is predominantly composed of Precambrian crystalline schists and granites, creating a rugged and rocky landscape. The coastline holds immense strategic significance due to its proximity to the Northern Limit Line, the contested maritime border between North and South Korea. In addition to the military presence, the coast is known for its rich fishing grounds and extensive sea salt production facilities. Historically, the peninsula was divided between the two states before the Korean War but has been entirely under North Korean control since the 1953 armistice. The local vegetation mainly consists of pine forests and scrubland adapted to the salty maritime environment.
