The city is primarily famous for Gwangmyeong Cave, a former mine transformed into one of Korea's largest themed cave parks, which is now a major tourist attraction. Economically, Gwangmyeong plays a central role as a location for large-scale retail centers, including what was the world's largest IKEA store at the time of its opening. The city also hosts the Gwangmyeong Velodrome, the largest cycling track in South Korea, renowned for Keirin racing. Geographically, the city area is bounded by several hills and the Anyangcheon River, which provides popular recreational spaces along its banks. Gwangmyeong has modernized significantly in recent years through extensive urban renewal projects. Historically, the area was once part of Siheung before attaining independent city status in 1981.
