Manwoldae (Palace Ruins) (North Korea)

Weather…

Manwoldae, the 'Palace of the Full Moon', was the main palace of the Goryeo Dynasty in its capital, Kaesong. Built in 919, it served as the seat of the royal family and government for nearly 500 years. The palace complex was expanded multiple times over the centuries, encompassing hundreds of buildings, pavilions, and gardens. It was the heart of political, cultural, and social life in Goryeo. In 1361, the palace was burned down during the Red Turban invasions and was never fully rebuilt. Today, only the foundations and terraces of the buildings remain. Archaeological excavations, jointly conducted by North and South Korea, have unearthed numerous artifacts and a better understanding of the palace layout. The ruins are a poignant testament to the splendor and abrupt end of the Goryeo Dynasty.
