Tomb of King Kongmin (North Korea)

Weather…

The Tomb of King Kongmin, also known as Hyonjongrung, is a magnificent double mausoleum located near Kaesong, dating back to the 14th century. It contains the remains of King Kongmin, the 31st monarch of the Koryo Dynasty, and his wife, the Mongol Princess Noguk. Construction of the site took place between 1365 and 1372, with the King himself overseeing the intricate design following the death of his queen. The complex features two large earthen mounds situated side-by-side on a raised granite platform, symbolically linked by a small internal passage. Surrounding the tombs are numerous stone statues of civil and military officials, as well as protective animals like tigers and sheep, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. The architectural layout and detailed carvings represent the peak of Koryo-era funerary art and significantly influenced later Joseon Dynasty royal tombs. In 2013, the tomb was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflecting its immense historical and cultural value to the Korean Peninsula.
