Songrim is a port city on the Taedong River, south of Pyongyang. Its name means 'pine forest,' but the city is anything but a natural idyll. It is a center of heavy industry, dominated by the huge Hwanghae Iron and Steel Complex. This plant, one of the largest in the country, was originally built during the Japanese colonial period and was a major target during the Korean War. Today, it is crucial for North Korea's steel production. Due to its location on the river, the city is an important inland port, allowing the transport of raw materials and finished products to Pyongyang and the port of Nampo on the Yellow Sea. Life in Songrim is heavily influenced by the work at the steelworks, with the associated environmental pollution and economic dependencies.
