Sonjuk Bridge (North Korea)

Weather…

The Sonjuk Bridge in Kaesong is a historic landmark dating back to the Koryo era. Originally built in 919, it was reconstructed into the current stone bridge in the 14th century. Its historical significance is inextricably linked to the fate of Jeong Mong-ju, a loyal scholar-statesman of the late Koryo period. In 1392, he was assassinated on this bridge by the men of Yi Bang-won, the future King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty, for his refusal to support the new dynasty. A brown spot on one of the stones is said to be his blood, which turns red when it rains. The bridge, along with the nearby Phyochung Pavilion honoring Jeong Mong-ju's loyalty, stands as a poignant symbol of unwavering fidelity in Korean history and culture.
