- Bus 382 from Amsterdam Sloterdijk is the most convenient route, dropping you right near the wide beach.
- Embrace the raw aesthetic: the massive Tata Steel plant provides a highly unique industrial backdrop for photos.
- Take a walk down the South Pier (Zuidpier), but always check the weather first as it closes during storms.
- Fresh fish is mandatory here; eat directly at the stalls around the harbor area for the best daily catch.

Located in the province of North Holland, IJmuiden is a city shaped by the sea. It is most famous for the world's largest sea locks, an impressive engineering masterpiece allowing huge ships to enter the North Sea Canal to Amsterdam. The city has a rugged, industrial charm but also features wide sandy beaches good for wind and kite surfing. A visit to the fish auction or enjoying freshly caught fish in one of the harbour restaurants is a must. The Forteiland IJmuiden, part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam (a UNESCO World Heritage site), also gives a glimpse into military history. Getting to IJmuiden is straightforward. By car, the city is easily accessible via the A9 motorway. There are also regular bus services from Haarlem and Amsterdam. The DFDS ferry directly connects IJmuiden with Newcastle in England, making it an important international gateway. The summer months are well-suited for beach activities, while spring and autumn are first-rate for exploring the locks and bunkers without the high-season crowds. However, the raw beauty of the port is fascinating all year round.
