Middenmeer is a significant agricultural village located in the Hollands Kroon municipality within the North Holland province. It holds historical importance as the first settlement established in the Wieringermeer, a polder reclaimed from the Zuiderzee between 1927 and 1930. The village's development was abruptly interrupted during the final weeks of World War II when German forces detonated the Wieringermeer dike on April 17, 1945, resulting in the complete flooding of the polder. Residents had only a few hours to evacuate before the land was submerged under several meters of water, causing extensive damage to the newly built infrastructure. Following the war, the dike was quickly repaired, and Middenmeer was reconstructed, evolving into a vital center for the regional farming industry. Today, the area is also known for the Agriport A7 business park, which hosts massive greenhouse complexes and large-scale data centers for international technology corporations.
