Duinen van Texel National Park (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Duinen van Texel National Park covers almost the entire west coast of the island of Texel and is one of the most diverse natural areas in the Netherlands. Established in 2002, the protected area spans approximately 43 square kilometers and consists of expansive dune landscapes, pine forests, marshes, and salt meadows. A unique feature of the park is 'De Slufter', a tidal lagoon where seawater flows in freely during high tide, creating a distinct environment for salt-tolerant flora. The park is a vital breeding and resting ground for numerous bird species and provides a habitat for seals and rare insects. Visitors can enjoy an extensive network of hiking and cycling paths, or visit the Ecomare center, which serves as a nature museum and seal sanctuary. The park plays a crucial role in coastal protection and the preservation of the Wadden Sea's unique ecological heritage.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The park stretches across almost the entire west coast and is very quickly accessible from all villages on Texel. The island itself is best reached by the regular car ferry departing from Den Helder.
📅
Best season
An extended visit is easily possible and enjoyable all year round. In summer, the wide beaches beckon, while in autumn and winter you can take wonderfully brisk beach walks in strong sea winds.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The maritime landscape consists of fascinating dunes, wide beach plains, and expansive open heathlands. Although the terrain is mostly flat, the deep sandy paths can be quite physically demanding to walk on.
🎒
What to bring
Absolutely windproof clothing is highly recommended on the frequently rough coast at almost any time. For longer hikes directly through the dunes, extremely comfortable and sturdy hiking boots are very advisable.
🅿️
Parking
There are usually paid parking lots for tourists at the numerous beach entrances and in the adjacent villages. However, the island's fantastic bicycle network is an excellent, healthy alternative to driving a car.
⚠️
Safety
Always pay very close attention to the shifting tides and dangerous currents if you are walking or swimming. Stay on the marked paths to absolutely avoid startling or disturbing the peacefully nesting local birds.
⏱️
Time needed
You can very easily and relaxingly spend the entire long day in the expansive park and on the beach. For a somewhat shorter walk strictly through the dunes, at least two full hours should definitely be planned.
