Hoofddorp is the administrative center of the Haarlemmermeer municipality in North Holland, situated on the bed of a lake that was drained in 1852. Founded shortly after the land reclamation, it was originally named Kruisdorp before being renamed Hoofddorp, which translates to 'Main Village'. Due to its strategic location adjacent to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Hoofddorp has evolved into a significant international business hub. Numerous multinational corporations have established their European headquarters here, giving the town a modern and bustling atmosphere. A historical highlight is the Fort at Hoofddorp, part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, a late 19th-century fortification ring designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Despite its intense economic activity, the town features extensive recreational areas like the Haarlemmermeerse Bos. Hoofddorp is a prime example of a city built from scratch on man-made land that now plays a pivotal role in the Dutch national economy.
