Marken (Netherlands)

Weather…

Marken is a unique village that was an island until 1957, before being connected to the mainland by a dike. Due to the constant threat of flooding, residents built their distinctive green wooden houses on artificial mounds (werven) or on stilts. This architecture gives Marken an unmistakable appearance, and it is now protected as a national heritage site. An absolute highlight is a hike along the coast to the 'Paard van Marken' (Horse of Marken), one of the most photographed lighthouses in the Netherlands, which stands lonely on the eastern tip of the peninsula. In the village, visitors can admire traditional dress and the craftsmanship of wooden shoe makers. The Marker Museum provides deep insights into the community's isolated history. Marken feels quieter and more authentic compared to neighboring Volendam. The narrow alleys and small canals between the houses invite exploration. At the harbor, you'll find cozy cafes from which you can watch the shipping traffic on the Markermeer. A visit to Marken feels like a journey back in time.
