Schoorl Dunes (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Schoorlse Duinen are the highest and widest dunes in the Netherlands, located along the coast of North Holland. Reaching elevations of up to 54 meters, they form a formidable natural barrier against the North Sea. The area is characterized by a unique mix of dense pine forests, open sand drifts, and sprawling heathlands. A famous local landmark is the 'Klimduin' (Climbing Dune) in the village of Schoorl, which rises steeply directly from the town square. Because the sand here is calcium-poor, a specialized ecosystem of mosses and lichens has developed. Over 60 kilometers of hiking trails traverse the landscape, which is managed to allow natural wind dynamics to reshape the dunes. Following significant forest fires between 2009 and 2011, conservation strategies shifted to favor spontaneous natural regeneration and more dynamic dune movement.
