Elst is a town in the Dutch province of Gelderland, strategically located between the cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen. The town is best known for its rich Roman past. In the basement of the Grote Kerk (Great Church), visitors can see the remains of two Roman temples that once stood here, a unique historical testimony in the Netherlands. The church itself, a Gothic structure, was severely damaged in World War II and subsequently rebuilt. Today, it houses a museum that highlights the Roman and early medieval history of the site. As part of the Betuwe region, Elst is also an important center for fruit cultivation, especially apples and pears. Every year in September, the traditional horse market (Elster Paardenmarkt) takes place here, one of the largest events of its kind in the Netherlands. The flat landscape is excellent for cycling tours along the orchards and through the photogenic surrounding villages. Getting there is very easy due to its own train station and proximity to the A325 motorway. The best time to visit is in spring when the fruit trees are in full bloom, or in September to experience the famous horse market.
