Wageningen is a city of profound historical and academic importance in the province of Gelderland, located on the northern bank of the Nederrijn river. Granted city rights in 1263, it served for centuries as a vital fortress on the border between the Duchy of Guelders and the Bishopric of Utrecht. Today, Wageningen is internationally famous as the home of Wageningen University & Research (WUR), a global leader in life sciences, agriculture, and environmental research. A pivotal moment in world history occurred here on May 5, 1945, when the capitulation of German forces in the Netherlands was signed at Hotel de Wereld, signaling the end of World War II in the country. The cityscape is characterized by a mix of university campus facilities, historic sites like the Great Church, and a lively student-driven culture. Positioned at the foot of the Grebbeberg hill and surrounded by fertile polders, Wageningen remains a center for both scientific innovation and natural preservation.
