Vaassen is a historic village in the province of Gelderland, picturesquely located at the transition between the Veluwe and the IJssel delta. The village's history dates back to 891, when it was first recorded under the name 'Fasna'. The community's standout landmark is Cannenburch Castle, a 16th-century moated castle built on the foundations of an older fortress for the military leader Marten van Rossem. The architecture of the village reflects its agricultural heritage as well as the influence of the paper and iron industries, which were powered by the numerous streams of the Veluwe. Today, Vaassen serves as a popular starting point for nature enthusiasts wishing to explore the neighboring forests and heathlands of the Veluwezoom National Park. The village community maintains traditional customs while modern infrastructure makes it an attractive residential area north of Apeldoorn. Nearby archaeological sites suggest that the region was inhabited as far back as the Iron Age.
