Tiznit is located in southwestern Morocco, situated between the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the Atlantic coast, and is widely regarded as the capital of Moroccan silver craftsmanship. The city was fortified in its current form in 1882 by Sultan Hassan I to establish a central military presence and exert control over the Souss region's tribes. Its impressive pisé (rammed earth) walls extend for about seven kilometers, featuring 36 watchtowers and five monumental gates that remain remarkably well-preserved. Historically, Tiznit served as a vital junction for trans-Saharan trade routes, linking the desert interior with coastal commercial hubs. The medina is famous for its jewelry souk, where artisans specialize in traditional Berber silverwork, characterized by intricate filigree and enamel techniques. The city's layout revolves around the Blue Spring (Ain Zerka), a historic water source that is central to local legends and sustains the surrounding palm groves. As the administrative seat of the Tiznit Province, the city balances its role as a cultural heritage site with modern economic activities focused on trade and agriculture.
