Tafraoute
Tafraoute is renowned for its sweeping setting in a valley of pink granite mountains. The town is famous for the 'Painted Rocks' (Les Roches Bleues), a monumental land-art project created by Belgian artist Jean Verame. The nearby Ameln Valley features striking hiking trails through traditional villages and ancient almond orchards. In February, the entire region turns white with blossoms during the Almond Blossom Festival. The town is considered the capital of Berber 'babouches,' the traditional yellow leather slippers. The local Chleuh Berber culture is lively here, reflected in the unique architecture and warm hospitality. Culinarically, you must try Amlou, a local spread made from almonds, argan oil, and honey. Getting there involves driving through scenic, winding mountain roads from Agadir or Tiznit. The best time to visit is late winter and spring, especially to witness the almond trees in bloom. The mild temperatures make the area good for outdoor activities such as trekking and rock climbing. In summer, the valley can become quite hot. Tafraoute is a paradise for nature lovers and independent travelers seeking an authentic mountain experience. The combination of glowing pink rocks, green valleys, and ochre-colored houses makes Tafraoute one of the most photogenic places in Morocco. Its relaxed atmosphere encourages visitors to stay for several days and discover the nuances of mountain life. A trip to the nearby Ait Mansour Gorge is an absolute highlight for anyone visiting the region.
