The Kasbah of Agadir Oufella, also known as the Old Kasbah, sits atop a hill 236 meters above sea level, offering a spectacular panoramic view of the harbor and the modern city. It was built in 1540 by Sultan Muhammad al-Shaykh of the Saadian dynasty to defend the city against Portuguese incursions. For centuries, it remained a thriving residential quarter featuring narrow alleys and a significant Jewish community. The Kasbah's destiny changed tragically on February 29, 1960, when a devastating earthquake struck Agadir, nearly completely leveling the fortress. Today, mostly the massive perimeter walls remain, though they have been meticulously restored in recent years. A prominent Arabic inscription on the wall translates to: 'Believe in God and honor the King.' The ruins now serve as a memorial site and an important symbol of the city's resilience. Visitors can reach the summit on foot or via cable car to enjoy the historic silence as the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean.

Visiting
The Kasbah of Agadir Oufella is a historical ruin on a hill overlooking Agadir and the harbor. The site is freely accessible and can be visited anytime; entry is free. The ruins can be explored from the outside and inside the walls, though many buildings are only partially preserved.
Typical hours
The kasbah is open 24/7 as there are no locked gates. For the best light and temperature conditions, a visit in the early morning or late afternoon is recommended.
Photography
Photography is allowed everywhere on the site and is popular. The panoramic views of the city and the sea offer great photo subjects, especially at sunset.
Time needed
A visit to the kasbah usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. If you want to thoroughly explore the ruins and enjoy the view, allow about 1.5 hours.
Combine with
Combine the kasbah with the Musée Municipal d’Agadir (City Museum) at the foot of the hill. Agadir beach is also just 10 minutes away by taxi and invites relaxation.
Getting there
The kasbah is on the hill north of central Agadir. You can reach it on foot from the city center in about 20 minutes uphill, or by taxi to the entrance. Parking is available at the foot of the hill.
Insider tip
Wear sturdy footwear as the path to the kasbah is steep and uneven. Bring plenty of water as there are no drink stalls on site.
