Lumangwe Falls on the Kalungwishi River is a quiet find in northern Zambia. Due to its shape and width of about 100 meters, it is often called the 'Little Victoria Falls'. The water plunges about 35 meters deep into a wide basin, creating a spray that feeds a small, permanent rainforest on the bank. The roar of the water can be heard for kilometers and conveys the untamed power of nature. The site is shrouded in myths; legend has it that a powerful spirit named Lumangwe lives here in the form of a giant snake. For the local population, the waterfall is a place of awe. Visitors can admire the falls from various viewpoints or hike along narrow paths through the moist forest. The remote location ensures that you often have the falls all to yourself, which makes the atmosphere particularly magical. Reaching the falls is challenging and usually involves traveling via Mporokoso. A 4x4 vehicle is essential due to the sandy tracks. Near the falls, there are basic campsites that offer a true wilderness experience. Travelers should bring their own supplies as there are almost no shopping facilities on site. The best time for a visit is from April to June, when the Kalungwishi River carries plenty of water after the rainy season.
