Taroudant is situated in the fertile Sous Valley of southern Morocco and is frequently called "Little Marrakech" due to its massive ramparts made of reddish mud-brick. Founded during the Almoravid era in the 11th century as a strategic military outpost, the city rose to prominence in the early 16th century when it became the first capital of the Saadian dynasty. The defensive walls stretch for nearly six kilometers and feature nine fortified gates, enclosing an authentic medina that has largely avoided modern commercialization. The city is celebrated for its traditional Berber crafts, particularly high-quality silver jewelry, leatherwork, and hand-woven carpets found in its bustling souks. Geographically tucked away between the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas mountain ranges, Taroudant serves as a critical commercial hub for the surrounding plains' citrus and olive production. Today, it remains a spirited center of local culture, offering a more tranquil and traditional experience compared to the larger imperial cities of the north.
