Sidi Boughaba is a significant nature reserve located on the Moroccan Atlantic coast, approximately six kilometers south of the town of Mehdia. At the heart of the reserve lies a permanent freshwater lake, uniquely separated from the ocean by a series of ancient, fossilized dunes. This wetland area is of international ecological importance and has been designated as a Ramsar site since 1990. The surrounding vegetation is dominated by red juniper forests, which are among the last remaining examples of such coastal woodlands in North Africa. Sidi Boughaba acts as a critical stopover and wintering ground for thousands of migratory birds traveling between Europe and Africa. One of its most notable inhabitants is the marbled duck, which finds one of its most important North African breeding sites here. Over 200 bird species have been recorded within the reserve, making it a focal point for ornithological studies. The conservation of this ecosystem is vital for preserving regional biodiversity against the pressure of nearby urban development.

The reserve is easily reached by car or taxi from the nearby city of Kenitra, located just south along the coast. It is situated roughly midway between Rabat and Tangier, just off the main coastal highway.
Best season
Winter and early spring are highly recommended as thousands of migratory birds settle around the lake. The summer months can become remarkably hot and crowded with local weekend picnickers.

The reserve features a mix of calm freshwater lake shores and shaded trails weaving through dense juniper forests. The designated walking paths are mostly flat, sandy, and accessible for casual hikers.
What to bring

There are designated parking areas specifically near the main entrance and the environmental education center. Finding a space is usually simple on weekdays but requires early arrival during weekends.

Swimming in the lake is strictly prohibited to protect the sensitive ecosystem and avoid waterborne diseases. Visitors are requested to stay on the trails to preserve the rare coastal juniper forest.
