The Mahabo Royal Cemetery is the most sacred burial ground of the Sakalava dynasty of the Menabe Kingdom in western Madagascar. Located approximately 45 kilometers south of Morondava, it houses the remains of significant rulers, including the revered King Andriamisara. The site is world-famous for the Fitampoha ritual, the bathing of the royal relics, which takes place every seven years and attracts thousands of pilgrims. During this ceremony, the sacred bones of the kings are carried to the Tsiribihina River for ritual cleansing and to seek ancestral blessings for the community. The tombs themselves are often enclosed by intricate wooden carvings depicting both erotic and mundane scenes, symbolizing fertility and the eternal cycle of life. Access to the cemetery is strictly regulated and governed by numerous taboos (fady) to maintain the site's spiritual purity. Mahabo stands not only as a historical monument but as a living center of sacred traditions that has documented the continuity of Sakalava culture for centuries.
