Kirindy Forest (Madagascar)

Weather…

Kirindy Forest, located about 60 kilometers north of Morondava, is one of the most important examples of the dry deciduous forests of western Madagascar. The reserve is primarily famous as the best place to spot the Fossa, the island's largest mammalian predator, which maintains a high population density here. In addition to the Fossa, the forest is home to the endangered giant jumping rat, an endemic species found only in this specific ecosystem. The vegetation is characterized by impressive baobab trees and a variety of thorny plants adapted to long periods of drought. Kirindy serves as a key research hub for the German Primate Center, which has conducted long-term studies on the eight resident lemur species, including the world's smallest primate, Madame Berthe's mouse lemur. The forest undergoes dramatic seasonal changes, transforming from a grey, leafless landscape during the dry season to a lush green canopy during the short rains. Protecting Kirindy is critical, as dry deciduous forests are among the most threatened habitats in Madagascar.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from April to October gives the best conditions for spotting fossas in Kirindy Forest. During the wet season (November to March) trails become muddy and animals are harder to see.
🌅
Best time of day
Fossas are most active during dawn and dusk; plan early morning and late afternoon game drives. Night walks may also reveal fossas as they are sometimes nocturnal hunters.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a safe distance from fossas and do not feed them. Stay inside vehicles during game drives and follow the guide's instructions. Respect the dry forest ecosystem at all times.
🎒
What to bring
Bring a flashlight or headlamp with red light for night walks to avoid disturbing wildlife. Good walking shoes are needed for forest trails. Binoculars help spot fossas in trees.
🧭
Getting there
Kirindy Forest is located near Morondava and can be reached by car (around 2 hours). Entry permits are available at the reserve office; guided tours are recommended for spotting fossas.
🦌
What to expect
Fossas are elusive and may require several hours of searching. Listen for rustling in the undergrowth and scan tree branches carefully. Enjoy the dry forest's unique flora while waiting.
