Alasora Royal Village (Madagascar)

Weather…

Alasora is one of the most prominent royal villages and is ranked among the twelve sacred hills of the Imerina Kingdom in the central highlands of Madagascar. It is revered as the birthplace of the Imerina monarchy, having been the residence of the legendary female rulers Rafohy and Rangita in the 16th century. The village is famous for its exceptionally well-preserved defensive systems, particularly the massive ditches (Hadivory) surrounding the hill to provide protection against raids. The monumental stone gate (Vavahady) at the entrance is a classic example of Merina fortification architecture. Alasora served as the political and spiritual nucleus from which King Andriamanelo initiated the unification of the Merina clans. The tombs of the early monarchs within the complex remain sacred sites for the Malagasy people to this day. The cultural significance of Alasora lies in its role as a repository of ancestral rites and the early history of Malagasy statehood. A visit to the village gives profound insight into the social hierarchy and religious practices that shaped Madagascar before European arrival.
