Analakely Market Pavilions (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Analakely Market Pavilions (historically Ambalonamana) are an architectural landmark in the heart of Antananarivo. These characteristic white halls with their curved roofs were designed in the 1930s by French architect Claude Laurige. They replaced the original open-air market known as 'Zoma,' which was once regarded as one of the largest markets in the world. The architecture blends colonial aesthetics with functional market design, providing shelter for vendors of textiles, food, and Malagasy handicrafts. Situated at the end of the Avenue de l'Indépendance, the pavilions form the focal point of daily commercial life in the capital. Despite the modernization of surrounding districts, the halls have preserved their historical structure. They serve not only as a place of trade but also as a meeting point for various social classes, reflecting the spirited culture and economic dynamism of the Malagasy metropolis.
